Ntokozo Sibande Buthelezi is a South African artist based in Johannesburg. She combines fashion design, textile art, and printmaking to create powerful works that advocate for women’s empowerment. Her art highlights the struggles women face and challenges the societal norms that hold them back.
Inspired by Family and Heritage
Buthelezi’s love for textiles started in childhood. Her grandmother and mother were both skilled sewers. She spent hours in her grandmother’s studio, surrounded by fabrics, sewing tools, and dressmaker forms. These early experiences shaped her artistic journey and made her aware of the inequalities women face in society.
Breaking Barriers with Chicken Wire
In her solo exhibition A Stitch in Time, Buthelezi presented works where she used an unexpected material—chicken wire. She wove fiber strings through the wire’s hexagonal gaps, turning a tool meant for restraining animals into a symbol of the restrictions placed on women. Her work transforms ordinary materials into deep and thought-provoking statements.
