At just 22, Will Chatlosh is pushing crochet as fine art. This Grand Rapids-born, New York-based artist is proving that crochet is not just a hobby. It’s a medium for storytelling, expression, and innovation. Will is on a mission to change how people see crochet. His work blends traditional fiber techniques with modern design, creating bold, expressive portraits and freeform sculptures.
Will first picked up a crochet hook at 11, learning from YouTube tutorials. What started as a hobby soon became a passion. He began with amigurumi, the Japanese art of crocheted stuffed toys, before moving into his own unique patterns and designs. By 2017, he was sharing his work on Instagram as @wccrochet, building a strong following.
Will Chatlosh’s Art Background
His formal education shaped his skills even further. He earned a BFA in Fashion Studies from Kendall College of Art and Design and an associate degree in Fashion Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), graduating with honors in both. Along the way, he mastered garment construction, embroidery, and trend research.
His work has gained national attention. He was featured in the December 2022 issue of Crochet World Magazine and won an award at ArtPrize, a major art competition in Grand Rapids. He has sold his work at galleries and markets, collaborating with brands like JOANN Fabrics, Boye Yarn & Crafts, Making Change Magazine, and Love Crafts. Also, he has worked with international fashion designers and installation artists.
The Quest to Redefine Crochet as Fine Art Continues
Will’s focus is clear—he wants to redefine crochet. His portraits and fiber sculptures show that yarn can tell stories, create movement, and evoke emotion. Each stitch acts like a brushstroke, forming highly detailed and expressive designs.
Moreover, through his work, Will proves that crochet belongs in galleries, museums, and serious art conversations. He continues to push the limits of fiber art, inspiring others to see its full potential.
